Hécuba, reina de Troya, símbolo de su pueblo, destronada por la invasión griega, es sometida a escarnio y sin desearlo se vuelve testigo de las crueldades de los ejércitos de Agamenón. Ella misma es víctima directa y ve con horror las muertes de sus hijos, la violencia contra sus hijas y el arrasamiento que echa por el piso el esplendor de los troyanos e incinera cualquier vestigio de la vieja gloria de los derrotados. Solo quedan algunas mujeres convertidas en esclavas y tomadas como botín de guerra. Los héroes son villanos, carecen de piedad, desafían el respeto por las reglas de la existencia y sacian sus instintos de ambición y desenfreno. El pretexto que ha desatado la guerra ha sido el amorío de París y Helena, pero la agresión ha sobrepasado los límites sangrientos de la venganza.
Hécuba ha conocido la vida palaciega y los privilegios del poder y cuando la rueda gira se le escapan los días felices y caen en el infortunio, perdiendo todo, menos la dignidad. Se deshace de orgullos y vanidades y encuentra su propia conciencia. El dolor la acerca a verdades delirantes y su clamor interno resuena como si su voz también fuera la suma de muchas voces. La rueda del destino modifica los rumbos, cambia las condiciones y confronta a los seres humanos, descubriendo lo recóndito, develando aspectos que suelen ocultarse y que a veces riñen con la cordura. La lógica del poder es devastadora y el espíritu de esta mujer indoblegable nos lleva a un final inesperado. Hécuba, reina de sí misma, es un personaje que trasciende el tiempo y le habla a la sensibilidad de nuestra época.
